Renovation Project Underway
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Halifax Humane Society is taking important steps toward keeping people and their pets together during times of crisis. In partnership with Greater Good Charities the Daytona Beach animal shelter will begin an almost two weeklong renovation project on Monday, Oct. 5, to help expand its resources for pets whose families are facing difficult circumstances.
The renovation will transform a former boarding kennel facility at Halifax Humane Society’s Culler Pet Resource Center into a dedicated crisis pet housing space, giving animals a safe place to stay while their owners navigate domestic violence, medical emergencies and other challenging situations.
Greater Good Charities is also seeking volunteers to help bring the renovation to life, with opportunities available throughout the week.
Conference for Housing People & Pets in Crisis
Taking place during the pet crisis shelter renovation project, Halifax Humane Society will host the Don’t Forget the Pets: Housing Pets & People in Crisis workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 14.
In collaboration with RedRover, Greater Good Charities, and the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County, the workshop will bring together animal welfare professionals, social service providers and community leaders to explore how communities can better support people and pets together. The initiative reflects a critical reality of concerns about how a beloved pet’s safety can prevent someone from seeking shelter, leaving an unsafe situation or accessing essential services.
