Shelter Medicine at Halifax Humane Society:
Veterinary Excellence for Every Animal
At Halifax Humane Society, we believe that every animal deserves exceptional medical care – from the moment they arrive at our shelter to the day they find their home. Our Shelter Medicine Program is the heartbeat of that promise.
WHY SHELTER MEDICINE MATTERS
Shelter medicine isn’t just important – it’s essential. Managing the health of a large and ever-changing population of dogs and cats takes a dedicated approach. Our program focuses on herd health management , ensuring that every animal is protected through proactive disease prevention, early intervention, and swift treatment when needed. Healthy animals lead to quicker adoptions and happier homes!
A FOCUS ON PREVENTATIVE CARE
Prevention is the first step to lifelong health. Every pet adopted from Halifax Humane Society is spayed or neutered before going home, helping to combat pet overpopulation and giving each animal the healthiest start possible. In addition to vaccinations, parasite prevention, and regular health checks, our team conducts daily population rounds throughout the entire shelter. These rounds allow our veterinary medical and animal sheltering teams to collaborate closely, assessing each animal’s health and determining the best pathways for their care, treatment, and adoption. By catching issues early and adjusting plans as needed, we ensure that every pet receives personalized attention.

EMERGENCY AND CRITICAL CARE
When emergencies happen, our team is ready.
- We provide urgent care to animals who arrive after being injured, such as those hit by cars.
- We deliver immediate medical attention to victims of cruelty or neglect, offering them comfort, relief, and a second chance at life. Our compassionate veterinarians and technicians work tirelessly to ensure that no animal suffers needlessly.

We are proud to offer a fully equipped, modern medical facility on-site, including:
- A full in-house diagnostic lab for fast, accurate results

Every resource is used with one goal in mind: to heal, protect, and care for every animal in need.
PARTNERING WITH THE BEST
We are honored to work closely with the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine faculty and outreach teams, as well as collaborate with the national Shelter Medicine Team at Best Friends Animal Society. Their expertise helps us train our staff, implement gold-standard protocols, and stay at the forefront of shelter medicine practices, ensuring our animals receive the highest quality of care available.
HEALING HAPPENS HERE
Our Shelter Medicine Program is more than a service – it’s a lifeline. By providing outstanding medical care, we give each animal a real chance to recover, to thrive, and to find the loving home they deserve.
