Behind the Scenes of Lifesaving: Why Commercial Laundry & Dishwashing Matter

When people think about animal shelters, they picture wagging tails, soft blankets, clean bowls, and dedicated staff providing hands-on care. What they don’t often see is the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that makes all of that possible.

That’s why we’re so excited to share that groundbreaking has officially occurred on our new Shelter Support Building — a critical investment in the systems that allow our team to spend less time washing and more time caring for animals. Construction is underway, with anticipated completion in May, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Turning Chores into Care

Every single day, Halifax Humane Society cares for approximately 250 animals — about 125 dogs and 125 cats. That level of care generates a tremendous amount of laundry and dishwashing:

• 375 towels washed daily
• 1,000 bowls, KONGs, and litter boxes cleaned and sanitized daily

Until now, much of that work relied on residential-grade equipment or time-intensive handwashing. While our team has always risen to the challenge, the numbers tell a powerful story about why this upgrade matters.

What Commercial Equipment Changes

Commercial Laundry Switching from residential machines to commercial equipment reduces active laundry labor from approximately 2.7 hours per day to just 40 minutes — saving more than two hours of staff time every single day.

Commercial Dishwashing Handwashing dishes and enrichment items can consume nearly 19 staff hours per day. A commercial dishwasher reduces that to just over one hour, returning more than 17 hours daily to direct animal care.

Together, commercial laundry and dishwashing will return nearly 20 staff hours every day back to feeding, enrichment, medical support, behavior work, and adoption preparation.

Built for a Lifesaving Future

This is exactly why the new Shelter Support Building matters. It’s not just about machines — it’s about capacity, efficiency, and humane care at scale. Commercial-grade equipment is designed for continuous, high-volume use, with faster turnaround, better sanitation, and lower long-term maintenance.

As we move toward completion this spring, we’re incredibly excited about what this building represents: a smarter, stronger foundation for lifesaving.

More time for care. More lives saved.
