Disaster Preparedness for Pet Owners

Halifax Humane Society urges pet owners to take notice and have a plan. Know where you will go, how will you get there and what you will need to take so your animals can stay with you. History has proven that leaving pets behind during disasters often has tragic and fatal consequences. Chances are, if you cannot survive a disaster, neither can your pets.

Use the checklist below to help prepare in the event of a disaster and consider your evacuation options.  If you are ordered to evacuate DO NOT leave your pets behind. Remember that your animals depend on you and cannot protect themselves. Try to make arrangements to go where your pet can be with you such as a friend or relative’s home.  More and more hotels are now accepting evacuees with pets.  Keep a list with their phone numbers handy.

Fortunately in Volusia County there are options for people with pets that have nowhere else to go.  Operated by the Volusia County Animal Services, in the event of an evacuation, the “People & Pets Shelter” will be opened at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, one-quarter mile east of I-4, on S.R. 44.  Because space is limited, people are asked to use this shelter only as a last resort.  You are required to bring your own provisions with you and proof of pet vaccinations, which is why it is so important to prepare early.   For more information about the People & Pets shelter, call 386-248-1790.
