Lucy (194348) was frightened and alone...
This little girl is just another poor hit-by-car victim. Running loose in the street, her tiny little body was no match for a moving car. She came into HHS battered and broken from her experience. HHS staff named her Lucy and did their best to calm her fears and make her comfortable while in our care. Clearly, Lucy needed surgery to repair her badly broken leg. With the help from skilled surgeons at Atlantic Animal Hospital, Lucy's wounds will heal and she is now recovering in the capable hands of a caring foster home. Her prognosis is very good for a full recovery, giving her a chance to live a long and healthy life in a good home.

Buddy - Animal # 183287
Buddy was a victim all around. First, he was found being viciously attack by 2 other dogs. Second, he had no identification on him to contact an owner.
Torn apart pretty bad, he was suffering from multiple severe puncture wounds that needed immediate medical attention. If this poor boy were to live, the burden of a several hundred dollar surgery bill would fall on HHS. The only hope Buddy had was for HHS to use money donated specifically to our Emergency Medical Fund. Luckily, money was available this time.
Thankfully, Buddy did start his recovery at HHS but still needed time to mend his emotional wounds as well. Once his story got out, we were able to find him a home that would continue his healing process and take very good care of him.
Buddy will most likely carry the physical scars from his ordeal for the rest of his life, but his emotional scars have been put to rest in the very capable hands of Lynn Williams, Hospital Administrator for Safe Haven Veterinary Hospital.
A Victim of Animal Abuse, Levi Survives!
Today, Levi is one very lucky cat. Just two short weeks ago, this young adult male feline was in critical condition and the chance of his survival did not look good at all. According to owner Billy McIntyre, Levi had been the victim in a terrible act of animal cruelty. Distraught over what had happened he knew his cat was in desperate need of serious medical attention.
Levi had been staying at a home in Ormond Beach with someone McIntyre knew. While at that house, the cat was brutally attacked and then left to die. Soon after McIntyre got his cat back he realized right away that they both needed help if Levi was going to live. With limited resources, McIntyre reached out for help.
When Halifax Humane Society heard about Levi, there was only one thing to do. We had to help. Using donations specifically marked for emergency medical care to animals at our shelter, Levi just had to hang on a little longer.
Working with HHS on this case, the Cat Care Clinic in Ormond Beach took Levi in for an evaluation. The initial examination revealed a badly broken front leg along with evidence of possible internal injuries. The Cat Care Clinic staff noted right away that Levi was a nice cat and he was in a lot of pain. He would need exploratory surgery to determine the extent of his internal injuries and to make the necessary repairs. At this point, Levi's condition was very grave and at best, he had a 50% chance of pulling through.Horrified at the abuse that this poor cat endured, all agreed to proceed forward with treatment to mend Levi's broken body. It took two difficult surgeries, but his strong personality combined with the caring staff and skilled surgeons of the Cat Care Clinic proved successful.
Now, McIntyre has Levi home with him again and although he is still recovering from his ordeal, he is doing remarkably well. Before the attack, McIntyre described Levi as a great cat that was friendly and loved to play. It is amazing, that despite his trauma, Levi has not given up on humans and still enjoys their company.
HHS would like to remind everyone how important it is to report animal cruelty to authorities and that animal abuse is a crime that should never be taken lightly. It is proven and well documented that anyone who would intentionally brutalize an animal is also a danger to society as it rarely stops there.
