Kate Thomas - a speaker for all ages!

"Humane education…it's not just for kids!" says Kate Thomas, Halifax Humane Society Education Director. It's a small department, consisting of well, just herself and a four-footed co-worker named Murphy.  Her primary job is to provide humane education to our community. Sounds simple and basic, but it is actually a very detailed job that entails much more than one would think. A 19-year veteran in this position at HHS, Kate has talked to thousands of adults & children over the years.  Always on top of things, Kate is very diligent in staying updated with the latest training and material related to animal issues.  It takes a lot of planning, but the benefits to our community are immeasurable.

Each engagement is carefully planed to address the needs of the topic and age group. For example, you wouldn't use the same protocol speaking to postal workers about "Dog Bite Prevention" that you would to second graders. An extremely good topic for both, just using a much different approach.

Kate's classroom programs have been highly successful in reaching students. Unfortunately, Kate's talents are a little less known among the adult community and she is looking to expand in this area. Whether you own animals or not, they are a part of our community and issues involving them will come up in most places you look. For instance, realtors that have rental property or homeowner associations might want ideas on how to deal with or prevent abandoned animals or dog bites. Detailed studies show a definite correlation between animal abuse and child/spouse abuse. This would be interesting to professionals in child care or family support systems. Kate will tailor animal topics to any group, club or organization. Topics such as: Dog Bite Prevention, Common Pet Behavior Problems, Responsible Pet Care, The Pet Overpopulation Crisis, Animal/Human Cruelty Link, Halifax Humane Society (who we are), etc. This is just one of the services that HHS provides to our community and we hope that our residents and businesses take full advantage of this program.
